It's Time for a Change in Stevens County

Years of Open Public Meetings Violations

Dump Wes McCart

Wes is currently SIX WEEKS behind in completing meeting minutes

The OPMA requires that meetings of the “governing body” of a "public agency" be open to the public.  RCW 42.30.030

“Action” is defined to mean “the transaction of the official business of a public agency by a governing body including but not limited to receipt of public testimony, deliberations, discussions, considerations, reviews, evaluations, and final actions.”

A “meeting” occurs when, with a collective intent to meet, a majority of the members of a governing body collectively transact the governing body’s official business.

In other words, meetings are how decisions are made regarding tax increases and services offered to Stevens County Citizens.

Wes insists that decisions he makes are kept from easy open public access.  The process for the public to get access to meetings is either in person after an agenda is posted only moments before the meeting takes place at the BOCC office in Colville.  The secondary option is to request access to the commissioners office email 30 minutes in advance of a meeting that is not always published until moments before the meeting.  If you would like to see a document that the BOCC is discussing you are told to contact the public records officer and you will receive an email stating that you might get the document within 45 days.  This is not open government.
